[Random] iPad and Us

January 31, 2010

Ever since the announcement, everyone has been split down the line over the iPad.  Let me stop right here first.

This name, iPad, is the absolute worst name on the face of the Earth. Apple, let Fujitsu have that joke of a name and just be simple like all of the other successful products you have.  Call it the Apple Tablet, the MacTablet, iTablet, ANYTHING but iPad.  Please!!!

Ok, back to my point.  A co-worker and I have been disagreeing over the purpose, functionality, and role of the iPad since day one.  I will try my best to share my point of view (since he aint here to put his two cents in HA!  Just kidding homie!)

Laptop Replacement?

My coworker is disappointed that you would likely not sync your iPhone to this device.  I see this device as something you would sync with your home machine.  This isn’t a replacement or a host for your music.  Rather, I would even go as far as to say I would actually prefer this device to stream music rather than housing my collection.  The iPhone’s size lends itself to a much more mobile player.  If I am holding my iPad, it will likely be while on the sofa, in bed, riding passenger on a car, or at a meeting.  Plus, this device will probably be on all the time, much like my iPhone.  My laptop is only on when I need it.  Think of how many steps it takes and minutes you wait for your laptop to boot up.  That latency is becoming a thing of the past, however, the iPad’s ability to act more like an iPhone or iPod touch provides super quick access to the web, an app, or your email.

Personally, I would love to see a great note / handwriting app developed for the iPad as soon as possible.  this device would provide so many possibilities in my work environment alone.  Let’s say I am in a meeting discussing an upcoming network deployment project.  If the iPad supports video out via the 30 pin connection and an adapter, I could likely hook into our projector and write out the topology plans right there on the spot, make adjustments and corrections, then turn around and email them right to the rest of the team.  No more taking pictures of a whiteboard before the next meeting.  This is just the start too.  Wait until the actual product is out in the wild and watch the development scene explode.

Tethering?

My opposing coworker also feels that you should be able to tether to your iPhone for data connectivity.  Right off the bat, I would guarantee that will never happen.  First off, at&t is providing a relatively cheap data-only plan for the 3G+WiFi version of the iPad.  No I personally will not buy that version.  I have an iPhone for instant gratification and data connectivity while on the go.  Secondly, if I am walking down the street, and suddenly have the urge to browse the web or enter a note or task on my todo list, I would never think to pull out my iPad and start typing away.  Again, the iPhone is the iPad’s perfect mate.

Again, with the foreseeable use of the iPad, it’s more likely to be used in either a home setting, or a business workplace, both are typically laden with WiFi networks.  However, your bases are still covered if you absolutely need network connectivity while out and about, they have a 3G version too.  Constant connectivity will always cost something.  Kinda gotta get used to that.

Removable Media?

Piggy-backing off the “sync” issue, I have another close friend who was astonished that there was no camera or removable storage connectivity included in the iPad’s design.  Again, this comes down to functionality and size.  First, size.  How idiotic would you look holding up a device that size and taking a picture in public?   “Hold still, wait, there it is, oh wait, I can’t hold it with one hand and press the camera icon…”  Silly really.  Second, functionality.  I believe that Apple is not intending to have the iPad to replace your laptop or desktop.  Take a photo with your iPhone, email or MMS it to your friends and family.  Why add yet another step to that process?

One of the best counters my friend had was “I have a super high-end digital camera.  I just took a slew of photos at a local concert and want to use the iPad’s gorgeous display to review, edit, or transport them to my Dropbox account.  How do I do that without camera connectivity or removable media?”  I somewhat agree, but more importantly, can fallback on Apple again… they are stating the camera connectivity kit will handle this.  My friend wasn’t too keen on purchasing that kit, not sure why though.  I mean, if you’re a photographer, chances are you are so concerned about quality to the point of purchasing a simple adapter to get that hi-res pic on the viewing table as soon as possible.

So where now?

No one can say what will be or won’t be until the actual device is on sale and in the publics hands.  We still haven’t heard an ounce of details on iPhone/iPad OS 3.2 (I hope they go with iOS as a general name by the way).  Further still, we have the possibility of 4.0 launching this summer with a refreshed iPhone handset as well.  Apple is wise, they aren’t going to show their cards yet.  It is very likely that the iPad’s real potential is in the handling of software and gestures.  The device is almost just a size adjustment.  I foresee the true powers and edge of the iPad and iPhone product line increasing dramatically in 2010.   Beware, last week was only a glimpse into the future.

[Coffee!] New Season, New Creamers

January 31, 2010

I am always on the go.  Be it at work or on the weekend, I am always moving or planning a facit of my life.  Having all the digital toys like my iMac, MacBook air, and iPhone really help keep the clutter to a minimal.  However, those do not compansate for the lack of energy and aren’t the first things I grab in the morning.

With the new season upon us and the holidays long gone, my favorite creamers are pulled from the shelves at the local market.  This really kinda mad me sad today when I was restocking my fridge.  I was feeling a little more adventurous today than normal, which is not typical when it comes to coffee or pens (I have a huge pen affinity and when I find one I like a lot, I will take it).

As I strolled the isles and came to the “coffee additives” section (my term, not theirs), I was faced with the seemingly impossible decision of which creamer would I be adding to my daily cup jug of coffee?  In a furious state of frustration, I exclaimed “There is no peace until my pallet is pleased with the best of you pathetic creamers!”  With that, there were a slew of horrid flavors each battling on the shelves for my hard earned dollars and they fought dirty.  One got kneed in the groin!  Hilarious on a creamer, not so much on a human mind you.

Suddenly the smoke from the brawl cleared and there were two brutalized combatants left standing: “White Chocolate Mocha” and “Vanilla Latte.”  The devastation was indescribable; so many had given their lives in the name of flavored-coffee consumption.  The dead had piled to either side of the shelves, leaving evidence to the destruction in the form of a pool on the floor below.  I had my winning contenders.  I smiled and felt absolutely no remorse for the slain and injured.  Collecting them, I turned back to gaze over the shelf one last time whispering, “this is not over, we will meet again.”

So I went home and made some coffee and wrote this.  Turns out, I had already tried these before but forgotten about it.

[Random] The App Thing

January 25, 2010

So it’s been a while since I had time to write a post, much less even try and study or learn Objective C and iPhone development.  After a few months I have come to the decision that I am just not a developer, no matter how much I want to be or how hard I try.  You either have it in you or you don’t.  I believe a developer is like a musician; really good developers are born with a certain mind frame, like a musician with an ear for melody.

I personally look at myself and see a guy who loves the iPhone and has a ton of ideas with no real understanding of its limitations.  Most of my ideas aren’t groundbreaking enough to make a huge mark on the App landscape, however, most of the 100,000+ don’t either.

So the question came to me, what to I do with this thing called “mochaSync?”  I love the ideas, I love the direction/motive for syncronicity, but with a really limited budget (both financially and free time speaking) where do I go?  What can I accomplish?

I still haven’t found an answer, but I am going to simply keep posting what I can.  I won’t be aiming to do reviews, as I think the world has a lot of review sites that simply kick much more ass than this one.  I won’t try to keep up with the mobile industry news, again, because there are just so many more sources covering these topics.  Why make more internet clutter?

Perhaps in time, I will carve out a niche, something unique to offer the world.  Until then, I will do my best to entertain you with my random thoughts, like this one.

On the eve of Tableture

January 25, 2010

Dont have much time for this post, but I just wanted to get a few words in at the moment while I sit here eating my lunch.

Wednesday, we are supposedly going to see a tablet made by Apple.  I personally am skeptical, not for the existence of said unit, but it’s functionality.  I really want to see this become my mobile writing pad or notebook.  I would love to have a digital notepad running an Apple OS, allowing me to take meeting minutes and sync or email them anywhere.  Perhaps it would allow VPN connectivity for in-browser VPN clients like Juniper Networks’ Network Connect.

Just think of what it could do for the medical industry!

Anyway, I for one am excited to see it – even if its not going to be something I would buy.  I just enjoy innovation.

[Poll] Save Arron’s Hair – Vote!

January 14, 2010

Recently, the follicles of one Arron (@razorianfly) have come under heavy scrutiny on the Twitterfield.  We can no longer stand by on the side lines as we watch one of our fellow  comrades give into the temptation of crew cuts and bed heads.  The time has come to make your voice heard!  Vote now!

Retweet this with #savearronshair and help spread the word!

[Wishful Thinking] An iPhone OS 4.0 Wish List

January 12, 2010

As we get closer to the highly anticipated late-January Apple event, many sites are doing a “Dear Apple” post detailing what they hope to see in the next iPhone OS.  Why should mochaSync be any different?  Here’s ours:

Dear Apple;

We have been head over heels about your device, and so are other carriers based on the “Hey, we have an iPhone like product, look over here!” type of ads aired everyday.  This however doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for improvement.  We’ve gathered a list of features we have been wanting to see in the next major iPhone OS update.  Don’t worry, we’ll keep it short, since there are so many more of these posts to read all over the net. ;)

  • Full OS Landscape Functionality with the ability to lock the orientation of our preference.  Yes, even the homescreen.
  • Ability to add a photo, video, or sound to an email without having to generate the message from a different app.  Sometimes, it’s nice to hit reply to an email and attach a photo rather than creating a whole new message or leaving the mail app to copy a photo from the camera roll.
  • Better navigation in mail app (ie, tapping the topbar of the app could drop down a H.U.D. like in “Newsstand” to other mail accounts).
  • SSL VPN support for products like Juniper Network Connect
  • Give us the option to change the default keyboard THROUGHOUT the OS to the Black one you have for the App Store.
  • Cool App Switcher tool like the Pre for multiple apps/background processing.  Maybe just allow us to select a few (<5) favorite apps to run in the background?
  • Ability to customize our homescreen background.  IS there any real reason why this wasn’t enabled from the start?
  • Allow us to set a default homepage / homescreen (ie, middle page is home instead of the first screen is our default homescreen)
  • Ability to disable the search page.  I have never used this since it came out and I get so frustrated when I accidentally swipe to the right one too many times.
  • A drag and drop SDK for retards like me.

Ok, that last one was a bit too ridiculous, but I think the rest are pretty valid points.  Here’s hoping to see a big gigantic update to the OS.  No go read the many wish list posts out there, you need to know what the cash carrying people want right?

[Update] TwitBird Bug

January 11, 2010

Not sure if this is limited to the Premium edition of TwitBird, however, I wanted to share my experience with you all.

Many people have pointed out that my tweets we being duplicated when I would send them from TwitBird Premium [iTunes link].  I must admit, I was somewhat embarrassed because I had just completed a pretty good review of the app for iPhoneiBlog.  However, I decided to do some testing then email the developer and visit their support site to post the bug details.  Within 24 hours I was pleased to see that they are going to address this in the next update.  Although the details of said update were left out, I suspect that this is not the only instance of this bug.

I can’t wait for this update, as I do love TwitBirds interface.  For now, it’s back to Twittelator [iTunes Link] which I was really happy with too, though mainly due to it’s feature list that seems to keep growing somehow!  I might not ever go back to TwitBird…

Follow my updates on Twitter via @mochaSync for the latest on TwitBird and more.

[Update] Two More App Ideas!

January 11, 2010

Over the weekend, I had some friends who helped me with two new app ideas for the iPhone.  One has an Android phone, so F’ him!  (Just kidding Matt).  Thanks guys for the support!

Don’t forget to visit the links here and vote for these apps!  Your votes can help get these or any of the others listed on my AppBoy profile page created!  So what are you waiting for?!  VOTE!

iPitchPipe [AppBoy link]

Based on the breath-into-the-iphone thing that powers the Smule apps, this app would play a pitch based on your selection, much like an a-cappella groups pitch pipe.

Main screen would be a rotating wheel with different pitch holes that you would rotate to select.

ShakeItUp [AppBoy link]

In a band? Got a ton of songs? Can’t decide what to play or where to fit in the new song? Or maybe you play 3 set of cover songs a night and want to keep things fresh?

What if you could enter your song list, select a few key points like Mood (happy, dark, sad, etc), Pace ‘n Feel (Balls Out, Slow in the Middle, Kill’em Softly, Theatrical, Pit Time, etc), and Duration, then shake your iPhone and watch an entire set list build itself based on your metrics? Wouldn’t that be cool?

[Poll] Your Favorite ReTweet Style?

January 11, 2010

Senseless question time since I have no clue what to blog about and damnit, I am just addicted to looking at stats for some dumb reason.

So, vote and what the hell, ReTweet?

[Update] Beta Testing, Reviews and Stuff

January 8, 2010

Beta Testing

Today I am starting to beta test a new application for the iPhone from one of my favorite developers.  I’m not sure how much detail I am cleared to share, but all I can say is that it looks like a great idea that is very functional matched with a gorgeous UI, something this developer is renown for.  Once they advise me I can post details, you’ll see it all here first.

I have been actively testing RandomPlay, an upcoming app by ChilliX which puts a nice spin on the everyday ”shuffle” function found on the native music app.  Im still not finding the bug that Apple seems to find but I love the app and I think you all will too.

Reviews

As you know, I like to write reviews for my favorite apps.  However, I’m more interested in helping out great developers and spreading the word on apps that deserve it.  So I am now taking suggestions, requests, and open to any ideas from consumers and developers alike.  Check out some of my work here on this site and also my work at The iPhoneiBlog.

If you’re a developer and wish to have your app reviewed, send me an email or contact me on Twitter.

Please note: I do not want payment or any reimbursement for a review, however, promo code for the app in question would be nice but not required.

I’m also available for contributing to blogs or review sites, and any promotional work you may have.
